Fellow .NET Developers -

2016 is moving forward. There are too many technologies and new announcements to keep up with them all. That is one of the great things about spending time at Developer meetups - you get the chance to spend time with fellow developers and hopefully learn something from them.

Microsoft Build 2016 also starts this week. Last year there were several great announcements with products ranging from HoloLens to Azure Service Fabric. I know this year I am looking forward to ASP.NET 5 getting one step closer to a full release.

Death of the Browser Plugin
Creating a rich document editing experience in a plugin-free world
For years, document editing on the web has been a multi-step process. Find your document, click to download, choose a place for the file, edit it locally, save and reupload the new version to your cloud location. This process results in temporary files littering a user’s computer and wasted time spent downloading and reuploading. Browser plugins, often written in Java, were developed to help make this process easier. Those plugins are now being phased out in modern browsers. Other companies have developed other tools for editing documents in the cloud, but many of them are limited in the file types available to edit or they require authenticating with an additional service provider.

The existing Documents feature in the BuilderTREND cloud application follows this same download/edit locally/reupload pattern. We are developing a solution that allows for editing these documents using native tools on the client computer. We’ll walk through the details of the application, which integrates SignalR, a client side web server, ClickOnce installation and WebApi web services into a seamless document editing experience.

BuilderTREND was founded in 2006 as a result of a simple observation: Residential construction companies needed user-friendly, web-based software. Software to help them build more projects, build them faster, reduce costly communication errors, and ultimately maximize customer satisfaction. While the system has expanded and become the most widely used and comprehensive cloud system in residential construction, our core principals about customer service have not changed. At the end of the day, we are a customer service company, we just happen to have the best residential construction software in the world.

BuilderTREND has grown its team to over 120 members. In late 2014, BuilderTREND expanded into a 27,000 sq-ft. office space in Omaha, Nebraska and created a "build-out" with employee satisfaction as the #1 priority. We're proud to have built a team environment where hard work is rewarded. We've also proven that work can and should be fun. After all you spend as many "awake hours" at work as at home! Our 2,000+ square-foot employee break area is equipped with a ping pong table, video game nook, pool table, three TVs, and soda fountain to name a few. Every Friday afternoon the entire team is treated to free lunch from great Omaha restaurants where we get a chance to build relationships far deeper than just "co-workers".
